About us
Welcome to farm-a-leaf!
We are a family operated vertical farm in Connecticut. If you are new to us, we invite you to learn about our business and what makes us who we are. To help explain the “WHY” behind farm-a-leaf, let’s start with what we will call the “WHY NOTs.”
The "WHY NOTs" to starting farm-a-leaf:
1. We are not in the business of revolutionizing farming: Though our farming is not done in the traditional sense, growing food hydroponically is not a new concept. It is actually one that has been around for decades and merely another way to grow food. Much like there are many ways to hammer a nail. You can use a hammer (traditional farming) or use a nail gun (farm-a-leaf). Neither option is wrong or better, just different. There is also fierce competition and so many options for consumers in this space to call what we do revolutionary, so we don’t… we merely stand on the shoulders of those before us to bring more of this food to you.
2. We are not out to save the world: Yes, we grow our food more sustainably versus traditional farming, since we use less space, less water, and no chemical pesticides or herbicides. But these practices are just benefits and do NOT make our farming superior nor a replacement to traditional farming (remember the hammer & nail analogy I gave before). We believe farm-a-leaf and traditional farms both have a place in our world.
The "WHY" to starting farm-a-leaf:
1. We want to modernize the local farming experience: we have set out to take an already existing service and modernize it. We want to merge technology and the age old fundamental practice of growing food to offer a more efficient, streamlined, and accessible food experience to our local community… to you!
2. We want to establish a company with morals and values: Nowadays, we feel like too many companies are simply in business to make money and make it at any cost necessary. Don’t get us wrong, we believe profit is important and without it no business can thrive. But at what point did businesses forget about responsibility, respect, or grace? Dealing with a business can feel impersonal and coming from a corporate background, we have seen it firsthand. We want farm-a-leaf to be different, and this is not just about saying what sounds nice. We want to be a company you and your family can trust and rely on to do the right thing, to put our customers and employees in the same esteem as being profitable, and we will get there by acting on the very things we say we stand on. This is why the farm-a-leaf tag line is: Honest. Dependable. Stewards. To learn more about what we mean, please read our values below.
It is our promise to you that we will live by our standard of integrity and stewardship so we can become a light to our community. By the blessings and grace bestowed upon us from our Lord, we aspire to display the utmost care and respect in everything we do.
Looking forward to serving you soon!
Blessings,
Chris, Maria & Giuliana Rivera
